چکیده

A common operation performed in Virtual Reality (VR) environments is locomotion. Although real walking can represent a natural and intuitive way to manage displacements such environments, its use generally limited by the size of area tracked VR system (typically, room) or requires expensive technologies cover particularly extended settings. number approaches have been proposed enable effective explorations VR, each characterized different hardware requirements costs, capable provide levels usability performance. However, lack well-defined methodology for assessing comparing available makes it difficult identify, among various alternatives, best solutions selected application domains. To deal with this issue, paper introduces novel evaluation testbed which, building on outcomes many separate works reported literature, aims support comprehensive analysis considered design space. An experimental protocol collecting objective subjective measures proposed, together scoring able rank locomotion based weighted set requirements. Testbed usage illustrated case requesting select technique adopt given scenario.

Isometric versus Elastic Surfboard Interfaces for Locomotion in Virtual Reality

Inspired by the “Silver Surfer” cartoons and movies, we designed and developed a surfboard travel interface, which works in either tilt or balance mode. The system supports the comparison of isometric and elastic devices for rate-controlled and position-controlled travel in virtual environments. In this paper, we demonstrate the interface as well as the setup of a complete virtual reality syste...

Learning Gait Parameters for Locomotion in Virtual Reality Systems

Mechanical repositioning is a locomotion technique that uses a locomotion interface to cancel the displacement of a user for walking on the spot. This technique is especially useful for virtual reality (VR) systems that use large-scale projective displays for visualization. In this paper, we present a machine learning approach for developing a mechanical repositioning technique based on a 1-D t...

A virtual reality testbed for brain-computer interface research.

Virtual reality promises to extend the realm of possible brain-computer interface (BCI) prototypes. Most of the work using electroencephalograph (EEG) signals in VR has focussed on brain-body actuated control, where biological signals from the body as well as the brain are used. We show that when subjects are allowed to move and act normally in an immersive virtual environment, cognitive evoked...

An Evaluation of Immersive Virtual Reality Systems for Design Reviews

ABSTRACT: With the growth of building information modeling (BIM) approaches to facility design, architectural, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry has been shifting to the use of three-dimensional (3D) virtual facility mockups during design. Studies have shown that 3D models when displayed in an immersive projection display environment allow users to interact with the virtual environme...

The Virtual Testbed: Latest Virtual Reality Technologies for Space Robotic Applications

In recent years, Virtual Reality has emerged as a key technology for improving and streamlining design, manufacturing and training processes. Based on experience in the fields of space robotics, industrial manufacturing and multiphysics virtual prototyping, a “Virtual Testbed” for space robotics applications is being realized. The Virtual Testbed is designed as an integrative software approach ...
